Vitamin C (as Ascorbic acid): Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin, meaning it is not stored long term in the body. Vitamin C is an essential nutrient, as we lack the enzyme L-gulonolactone oxidase used to synthesize vitamin C from glucose. In our bodies, vitamin C acts as an antioxidant or reducing agent. Extra electrons present in the vitamin C molecule may be donated to free radicals, therefore reducing them. This is commonly referred to as “quenching” free radicals. Free radicals are naturally produced by oxidative processes in the body, but when left unquenched, they may lead to a destructive cascade resulting in damage to or death of healthy cells.* [1][2][3][4]

Vitamin C is also required for the synthesis of hormones including melanotropin, norepinephrine, and epinephrine. Ascorbic acid also plays several key roles in immune function. Vitamin C stimulates the production and function of leukocytes, namely neutrophils, lymphocytes, and phagocytes.* [5][6][7]

Vitamin C also stimulates cellular motility, chemotaxis, and phagocytosis, all functions essential to optimal performance of the immune system. Vitamin C has also been demonstrated to increase the levels of antibodies and complement proteins, important players in immune function. Vitamin B6 (as Pyridoxine HCL): Vitamin B6 is one of the B vitamins that benefits the central nervous system. It is involved in producing the neurotransmitters serotonin and norepinephrine, and in forming myelin. Vitamin B6, also known as pyridoxine, is a water-soluble vitamin that your body needs for several functions. Your body cannot produce vitamin B6, so you must obtain it from foods or supplements. Vitamin B6 is released from food and absorbed in the intestine via saturable transporters. Once absorbed, the pyridoxine is converted into the bioactive forms of pyridoxal 5’-phosphate (PLP) and pyridoxamine phosphate (PMP) in the liver. PLP is the cofactor for a large number of enzymes used in amino acid metabolism.* [14][15][16][17][18][19][20]

Vitamin B6 plays an important role in mood regulation. This is partly because this vitamin is necessary for creating neurotransmitters that regulate emotions, including serotonin, dopamine and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). Vitamin B6 may also play a role in decreasing high blood levels of the amino acid homocysteine, which have been linked to depression and other psychiatric issues.* Not getting enough vitamin B6 can lead to low hemoglobin and anemia, so supplementing with his vitamin may prevent or treat these issues.* [21][22][23][24][25]

Zinc (as Zinc oxide): Zinc is ubiquitous in the body. Zinc is needed for the proper growth and maintenance of the human body. Accordingly, Elderberry is used for colds, feverish catarrhal complaints, cough, and bronchitis, as well as an expectorant for treatment of mild inflammation of the upper respiratory tract. The standardized Elderberry extract activates the healthy immune system and may possess immunoprotective or immunostimulatory effects when administered to patients with various diseases. Echinacea Powder (Echinacea purpurea)(aerial): Echinacea, one of the most popular botanical supplements in North America, is employed as an immunemodulator, with antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. So far, the overall therapeutic activity of Echinacea cannot be attributed to any single constituent. Pharmacological effects related to immune functions have been demonstrated for both high- and low-molecular-weight constituents.

Compounds from the classes of caffeic acid derivatives, alkamides, polysaccharides, and glycoproteins are regarded as the most relevant constituents. Recent
experiments have demonstrated that alkamides are detectable in human blood in relevant concentrations after oral administration of Echinacea reparations. Moreover, it has been shown that the main alkamides cross the BBB and bind to CB receptors, which is now considered as a possible molecular mode of action of Echinacea alkamides as immunomodulatory agents. Employing various species, plant parts, and extraction procedures results in different Echinacea preparations having distinguished phytochemical profiles. Clinical effectiveness may vary because of discrepancies in the chemical profile.

Standardization of botanicals should guarantee that preparations contain therapeutically effective doses of active principles and should assure consistent batch-to-batch composition and stability of the active constituents. Also, clinical trials should be performed only with well-characterized Echinaceapreparations.  [41][42][43][44][45]

Garlic Powder (Allium sativum)(bulb): Garlic is a fragrant culinary herb from the genus and species Allium sativum which has been traditionally used worldwide for centuries. Garlic is made up of more than 200 chemicals including the sulfur compounds (allicin, alliin, and agoene); volatile oils; enzymes (allinase, peroxidase, and miracynase); carbohydrates (sucrose and glucose); minerals; amino acids such as cysteine, glutamine, isoleucine, and methionine; bioflavonoids such as quercetin and cyanidin; and vitamins A, C, E, B1, B2, niacin, and beta-carotene.

The beneficial properties of garlic are most commonly tied to their organosulfur compounds. Whole garlic bulbs contain alliin (S-allylcysteine (SAC) sulfoxide), gammaglutamyl-S-allylcysteine (GSAC), S-methylcysteine sulfoxide (methiin), S-trans-1-propenylcysteine sulfoxide, and S-2-arboxypropylglutathione and SAC. Cutting, crushing, or grinding garlic releases the enzyme alliinase, which very quickly converts alliin to allicin. Allicin is responsible for the pungent odor and taste of garlic. Allicin is easily transformed into oil-soluble polysulfides, namely, diallyl disulfide, diallyl sulfide, diallyl trisulfide (DATS), and diallyl tetrasulfide. Because of allicin’s instability, it is unlikely that it is responsible for the biological activity of garlic. An active component of garlic, Ajoene (4, 5, 9-trithiadodeca-1, 6, 11-triene-9-oxide) is generated via allicin Sthiolation and 2-propenesulfenic acid addition. Other active compounds, SAC and Sallylmercaptocysteine (SAMC) are water-soluble compounds formed during aqueous garlic extraction.

Garlic is also supplemented to support immune function. The immunomodulatory benefits of garlic are believed to be attributed to the protein fraction of the herb. These fractions have been shown to inhibit activation of nuclear factor kappa B (NF-КB) in T-cells and increase phagocytosis, natural killer (NK) cell activity, antibody titers, and lymphocyte counts. A human clinical study providing 2.56 g/day of AGE reported a significant reduction in the severity of cold and flu symptoms as well as improved proliferation of gamma–delta T-cells and NK cells.
