ARTICULAR™ BONE AND JOINT HEALTH SUPPLEMENT

Quercetin is known to be a powerful antioxidant that may help in fighting off and treating a number of health conditions. No wonder, it is considered as an ingredient in many supplement products. Now, let us find out what are some of the major health benefits that are associated with it.

What are the Benefits of Quercetin?

  • May be an effective anti-inflammatory
  • Can be a treatment for allergies
  • Fighting free radicals
  • Decreases the risk of acquiring chronic brain conditions
  • Lowering high blood pressure
  • Reducing the risk of cancer
  • Preventing neurological diseases
  • Preventing infections
  • Reducing the risk of heart disease

According to studies, quercetin may have the capacity to decrease inflammation. Some test-tube studies showed that quercetin was able to decrease the inflammation markers in the human cells, such as the interleukin-6 (IL-6) and the tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNFα). (1, 2)

Moreover, a study that involved 50 women suffering from rheumatoid arthritis concluded that those who took quercetin for eight weeks were able to experience decreased early-morning and after-activity pain. In addition, it was observed that the inflammation markers were reduced. (1, 2)

The anti-inflammatory properties of quercetin are also believed to ease allergy symptoms. According to several animal and test-tube studies, quercetin may inhibit the inflammation-causing chemicals, like histamine, and prevent the inflammation enzymes. (1, 2, 3)

One study involving mice showed that quercetin supplements could suppress anaphylactic reactions caused by peanuts. However, more studies are needed to confirm if this will work the same on humans.  (1)

Being rich in antioxidants, quercetin may also have effective anti-cancer properties. A review of animal and test-tube studies concluded that quercetin could prevent growth and even kill prostate cancer cells. Other animal and test-tube studies showed the same result in other types of cancer cells. (1, 2, 3, 4)

Research also suggests that quercetin may be effective in preventing the development of degenerative brain disorders, like dementia and Alzheimer’s. This could be another advantage brought by its antioxidant properties. (1)

Some studies involving mice concluded that quercetin could reverse the markers of Alzheimer’s disease. It was also observed that these mice, which received quercetin, were able to perform better during learning tests and their brain functions improved. (1, 2)

Research also suggested that quercetin could effectively lower blood pressure levels. Some test-tube studies revealed that this is due to the compound’s capacity to relax the blood vessels. (1, 2)

One study showed that mice with high blood pressure, which received quercetin regularly for 5 weeks, had decreased diastolic and systolic blood pressure values. Furthermore, a review on nine human studies, which involved 580 participants, revealed that taking quercetin supplements daily could result in reduced diastolic and systolic blood pressure. (1, 2)

Most of the studies supporting the effectiveness of quercetin in promoting health were usually done on animals and test-tubes. Thus, more human research is necessary to find out if this compound can really be a good alternative treatment for certain diseases.

What is Quercetin?

So, what is quercetin?

Quercetin is a natural pigment that is part of the plant compound group known as flavonoids. These flavonoids can be found in different food products, such as fruits and vegetables, and even in wine and tea. These are associated with various health benefits, like decreased risk of acquiring cancer, heart disease, and degenerative brain disorders. (1, 2)

Quercetin is the largest amount of flavonoid that you can find in the diet. According to a study, the average person can consume up to 100 mg of quercetin a day through different food sources. Some of the foods that are rich in quercetin are cherries, apples, onions, capers, broccoli, citrus, and others. (1, 2)

You can also take quercetin in capsule or powder form. Many people take quercetin supplement for health reasons, such as combatting inflammation, boosting immunity, and fighting off allergies.

How Does Quercetin Work?

The effectiveness of quercetin and other flavonoids is attributed to their antioxidant properties. Antioxidants are known to fight the free radicals in the body.

These free radicals are molecules that, in high amount, may result in cellular damage. Some of the health conditions that are caused by free radicals are diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.

How Do I Take Quercetin?

If you want to take quercetin supplementation, you can purchase dietary supplements from health food shops or even online. It is available in different forms, such as powders and capsules. The recommended dosage daily ranges from 500 to 1000 mg.

Quercetin, if taken alone, will be absorbed by your body poorly since it has low bioavailability. For this reason, quercetin supplements usually include other ingredients, like bromelain (a digestive enzyme) or vitamin C, to increase the absorption rate. In addition, combining quercetin with other flavonoid supplements, like catechins and resveratrol, may have a synergistic effect.

Can I Take Them Along with Vitamins or Medicines?

Quercetin may have interaction with some medications, such as blood pressure drugs and antibiotics. For this reason, if you have any health condition, tell your doctor first about your plan to take it as a supplement. This way, your physician can tell you if such supplementation is safe for you or not.

Also, please be advised that there is no enough research yet proving that quercetin can be an alternative treatment for any disease.

Is Quercetin Safe?

Since quercetin is naturally found in many vegetables and fruits—which are healthy and recommended for the human health—it is generally safe for consumption. Moreover, as a supplement, it is mostly safe and may only have little or no side effects at all.

Reported side effects were usually the result of taking over 1000 mg of the supplement daily. It caused several mild symptoms, including tingling sensations, stomach aches, and headaches.

Quercetin is also safe for pregnant and breastfeeding mothers, as long as it is taken as food. Nevertheless, it is not recommended for them to take quercetin supplements because there is no enough research confirming its safety. Therefore, it is best that they consult their doctor first before trying any product.

Just like with other health supplements, it is best for anyone to seek advice from healthcare providers before taking Quercetin supplements.
