Many studies supporting the health potentials of marshmallow, especially its roots, have surfaced. For this reason, this herb is becoming a popular supplement for treating different ailments. Do you know what they are? Check out some of them.

Being rich in mucilaginous content, marshmallow root is being used as a cough and cold remedy. It works by acting as an enzyme that helps loosen mucous and stop bacteria from multiplying.

In 2005, a small study discovered a herbal cough syrup that had marshmallow root. It was found to be effective in treating coughs that were caused by colds or respiratory tract diseases which had mucous formation. According to the study, the 62 respondents, who took the syrup, were able to experience 86-90% symptom relief within 12 days. (1, 2)

Marshmallow root is also anti-inflammatory. This property is said to help treat skin irritation due to dermatitis, eczema, and furunculosis.

One review done in 2013 revealed that an ointment with 20% marshmallow root extract could decrease skin irritation. According to researchers, the extract may have stimulated the anti-inflammatory activity of certain cells. (1)

Moreover, marshmallow root is believed to be effective in healing wounds because it has anti-bacterial properties.

A 2015 animal study suggested that marshmallow root extract may have the capacity to cure gram-positive bacteria. These bacteria cause more than 50% of the known infections, including “super bugs”. The result of the study showed that the extract, when used topically, resulted in increased wound healing in rats, compared to antibiotics. (1, 2)

Marshmallow root is also believed to support overall skin health. It may help improve skin that has been damaged by the UV (ultraviolet) radiation. That is why this herb is recommended to be applied topically before the user goes out to the sun.  This is supported by a study in 2016 that promoted using this herb’s extract in skincare formulations. (1)

This herb may also be effective as a pain reliever. A 2014 study stated that it can function as an analgesic, making it effective in relieving pain. Therefore, marshmallow root could be a good alternative solution in providing relief for conditions like an abrasion or sore throat. (1)

Marshmallow root may also have the capacity to act as a diuretic. Meaning, it can help in cleansing the bladder and kidneys by aiding in flushing the excess fluid out of the body.

There are more studies suggesting that it supports total urinary health. One study from 2015 stated that the herb’s antibacterial properties may help treat urinary tract infections (UTIs). Then, a 2016 research suggested that its soothing effect may relieve urinary tract inflammation and internal irritation. (1, 2)

Marshmallow root has the capacity to treat various digestive problems, such as intestinal colic, heartburn, and constipation.

One study in 2011 showed that marshmallow flower extract may be effective in curing gastric ulcers in rats. The anti-ulcer activity was observed after a month of taking the extract. (1)

This herb is also known to be rich in antioxidants, which are helpful in protecting the body against free radicals. A 2011 research discovered that marshmallow root extract can be compared to standard antioxidants. (1)

Marshmallow flower extract may support heart health too. More studies are being carried out to investigate its effectiveness in treating several heart problems.

In 2011, an animal study observed the effectiveness of this extract in treating inflammation, platelet aggregation, and lipemia, which are conditions that can be linked to cardiovascular disease. According to the researchers, taking the extract for a month resulted in a positive effect on the cholesterol levels, thus promoting heart health. (1)

With all these health benefits associated with marshmallow, many consider it a good health supplement. However, more research is still necessary to prove its effectiveness and safety.

What is Marshmallow?

Whenever you hear the word “marshmallow” you probably think about the fluffy treat that is normally roasted during campfires. However, the marshmallow that we are talking about now is a kind of plant.

Scientifically known as Althaea Officinalis, marshmallow is an African herb that has tiny pale flowers and short, round leaves. It has been used as a traditional medicine for centuries, such as in Egypt and France. Now, it is still used for different medicinal purposes.

How Does Marshmallow Work?

Marshmallow functions as a mucilage that produces a substance that envelopes membranes. Its extract is rich in flavonoids, which are known to be anti-inflammatory. These flavonoids can decrease inflammation, and it is the mucilage that holds them together and inhibits further damage.

Furthermore, marshmallow extract induces phagocytosis, the process of how some cells take in dead cell tissues, bacteria, and other particles. This is helpful in speeding up healing. Marshmallow effectively works on inflammatory digestive disorders because the mucilage is unchanged until it gets to the colon.

How Do I Take Marshmallow?

The right dosage for using marshmallow as a supplement or treatment depends on some factors, like health, age, and others. As of the moment, more studies are still needed to determine the proper range of dosages for marshmallow.

For your safety, it is recommended that you seek your doctor’s advice about using this herb as a supplement. Make sure that you also follow the direction for usage on the product’s label.

Can I Take It Along with Vitamins or Medicines?

Since marshmallow contains mucilage, it can reduce the amount of medicine that is absorbed by the body. This means that if you take marshmallow supplements together with your oral medications, the effectiveness of your medicines will be decreased. To avoid this from happening, it is advised that you take it at least an hour after you have taken your medications.

For more information about the possible interactions of marshmallow, please consult your doctor or a pharmacist, especially if you are on medications.

Is Marshmallow Safe?

When taken by mouth, marshmallow is generally safe. It is also possible safe if applied topically on the skin.

There are some precautions though. One is that there is not enough information yet about the safety of using this as a supplement during pregnancy and breast-feeding. Therefore, women in these stages are advised to stay on the safe side by not using it.

People with diabetes are also advised to be careful when taking marshmallow as it could interfere with blood sugar regulation. Thus, they should have their blood sugar carefully monitored to avoid any risk.

Marshmallow may also affect blood clotting. This could increase the risk of bleeding. For this reason, people who are scheduled for surgery must stop taking this herb as a supplement at least 2 weeks before the operation.
