If you want to find out what are the health benefits associated with ginger root powder, check out the following.

Ginger is known to contain gingerol, a substance that is believed to decrease the risk of infections. According to some studies, ginger root extract could prevent the growth of various kinds of bacteria. (1, 2)

Fresh ginger is claimed to combat the RSV virus, which causes respiratory infections. Ginger extract is also claimed to fight off oral bacteria, which can cause inflammatory conditions in the gums, like periodontitis and gingivitis. (1, 2)

Some studies also supported that ginger root powder may be effective at decreasing the osteoarthritis symptoms.

One controlled trial involving 247 respondents with knee osteoarthritis reported that those who took ginger root extract experienced less pain and had a minimal need for a pain reliever. (1)

Another study discovered that combining ginger with sesame oil, cinnamon, and mastic can decrease stiffness and pain associated with osteoarthritis when used topically. (1)

Ginger also seems to be an effective solution against nausea. (1)

For centuries, this has been a traditional cure for seasickness. It is believed to be as effective as a prescribed drug. (1)

This is also used to relieve vomiting and nausea caused by surgery or chemotherapy. (1, 2)

Among all, ginger root is probably most effective in treating morning sickness or pregnancy-caused nausea. One review done on 12 studies involving pregnant women concluded that ginger could decrease nausea-related symptoms. (1)

Consuming ginger root powder may also help you cure muscle pain that is caused by doing exercise. The impact would not be felt right away, but it could be effective in inhibiting muscle pain progression. (1)

One research showed that taking 2 grams of the supplement daily for 11 days decreased muscle pain in respondents doing elbow exercises. (1)

Ginger root may help lower blood sugar levels and reduce the risk of heart problems. One 2015 study, which involved 41 participants having type 2 diabetes, reported that 2 grams of ginger root powder daily could reduce fasting blood sugar up to 12%. Moreover, it improved their HbA1c, decreasing up to 10% within 12 weeks. (1)

The same study also showed a 28% decrease in the ApoB/ApoA-I ratio, plus a 23% decrease in oxidized lipoprotein markers. These two can increase the risk of heart disease.

Some evidence also showed that, in both animals and humans, ginger could make a significant decrease in LDL and blood triglyceride levels.

A study involving 85 respondents with high cholesterol revealed that taking 3 grams of ginger root powder could result in reduced cholesterol markers within 45 days. This was supported by another study done on rats with hypothyroidism. It reported that ginger extract was as effective as atorvastatin, a drug that lowers cholesterol, in reducing the LDL cholesterol. (1, 2)

Ginger root may also help relieve chronic indigestion or dyspepsia. The supplement is claimed to aid in emptying the stomach at a faster rate. One study suggested that it could reduce the emptying of the stomach from 16 minutes to 12. (1)

Another study done on 24 people suggested taking 1.2 grams of ginger root powder before meals could speed up the emptying of the stomach up 50%. (1)

Furthermore, ginger has 6-gingerol, a substance that has protective properties against cancer. (1, 2)

Although the evidence is still limited, some studies supported the claim that ginger root could be effective in fighting off breast cancer, ovarian cancer, and pancreatic cancer. (1, 2, 3)

Ginger root may also be good for the brain. Some animal studies suggested that the bioactive compounds and antioxidants found in ginger can prevent inflammatory activities in the brain. (1)

Ginger may help in improving brain function too. A study involving 60 women showed that ginger extract enhanced their working memory and reaction time. (1)

Several animal studies also showed that ginger root may be effective in preventing brain function decline that comes with age. (1, 2)

Ginger root powder has other potentials benefits. However, all these need to be proven by more research. It should not be taken as a replacement for any medication.

What is Ginger Root?

Ginger, also known as ginger root, is a plant characterised by leafy stems and yellow-green flowers. The ginger spice we know is from this plant’s roots.

The ginger plant is originally from the warm parts of Asia, like India, Japan, China, India, and the Philippines. However, now it is already grown in some parts of Africa, South America, and even in the Middle East to be used as spice and medicine.

How Does Ginger Root Work?

Ginger has chemicals, like gingerol, that may be effective in reducing inflammation and nausea. According to researchers, these chemicals mainly function in the digestive system, specifically the stomach and the intestines. Nevertheless, it can also work in the nervous system and brain to regulate nausea.

How Do I Take Ginger Root?

Aside from being a spice, ginger root may be consumed orally as a herbal treatment to stop nausea that is the result of pregnancy, motion sickness, surgery, and chemotherapy.

In the Philippines, the ginger root is made into a herbal tea called salabat. It is used as a remedy for nausea, flu, colds, indigestion, and sore throat. It is also believed to promote liver health. To make a tea, you can either use ginger root powder or naturally boil the rhizome.

No ginger root dosages have been advised for any health condition. Therefore, it is best if you consult your doctor before taking it as a supplement.

Can I Take It Along with Vitamins or Medicines?

Ginger root supplements may interact with certain medications. For this reason, if you are taking any medicine for a certain condition, it is best if you consult your doctor first.

Since ginger root may slow down blood clotting, it is not advisable to use it simultaneously with anticoagulant or anti platelet drugs. Doing so might increase the chance of bleeding and bruising. Some of these drugs are aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, etc.), warfarin (Coumadin), and phenprocoumon.

Medications for diabetes may also interact with ginger. Since ginger root may decrease blood sugar, taking it with anti-diabetes drugs might result in too low blood sugar levels. Some of these drugs are insulin, glimepiride (Amaryl), chlorpropamide (Diabinese), and rosiglitazone (Avandia).

You should also avoid combining ginger supplementation with anti-hypertension drugs. Since ginger may reduce blood pressure, you might end up with an irregular heartbeat or too low blood pressure. Examples of these medications are amlodipine (Norvasc), felodipine (Plendil), and isradipine (DynaCirc).

Is Ginger Root Powder Safe?

If taken in small dosages, ginger root powder may have a few side effects. Some of them are heartburn, gas, upset stomach, and mouth irritation. High dosage, which is more 5 grams daily, can lead to skin rashes.
