ARTICULAR™ BONE AND JOINT HEALTH SUPPLEMENT

Cat’s claw is a herbal supplement that is growing in popularity these days. It is believed to help prevent and treat certain diseases, such as arthritis, infections, Alzheimer’s disease, and even cancer. However, not everything of these claims is supported by science. Let us check out some of the health benefits of cat’s claw that are backed up by research. Find out whether this supplement will be beneficial for you or not.

What are the Benefits of Cat’s Claw?

  • Possesses clear anti inflammatory effect;
  • May improve the immune system;
  • May lowers high blood pressure;
  • May relieve osteoarthritis symptoms;
  • May relieve rheumatoid arthritis symptoms;
  • It is also used for various digestive system disorders.

The first benefit that is associated with the cat’s claw is its capability to boost the immune system. This means that it may have the power to effectively fight off infections. This characteristic is attributed to its anti-inflammatory properties. (1, 2, 3)

One study involving 27 men who consumed cat’s claw extract for two months reported that the respondents had produced more white blood cells, which play an important role in fighting infections. One more small study, which involved 4 men taking cat’s claw extract for 6 weeks, came up with the same result. (1, 2)

Cat’s claw is also claimed to be a potential treatment for osteoarthritis. This joint condition is very rampant among elderlies, and it causes stiff and painful joints.

According to scientists, the effectiveness of cat’s claw in relieving osteoarthritis symptoms could be the result of its anti-inflammatory properties. (1, 2)

Research supported this report. A study conducted on 45 respondents with knee osteoporosis showed that in 4 weeks of taking cat’s claw extract, patients experienced decreased pain when doing physical activities. Another study which ran for eight weeks reported that taking a supplement containing cat’s claw resulted in reduced stiffness and pain in osteoarthritis patients. It also caused them to lessen their need for pain medication. (1, 2)

There was also a trial conducted which involved giving cat’s claw extract to osteoarthritis patients alongside a mineral supplement. After 1 to 2 weeks, these respondents experienced improvement in their joint function and pain. (1)

Cat’s claw is also recommended to those who suffer from rheumatoid arthritis. This autoimmune condition results in painful and swollen joints in adults. Just like osteoarthritis, its prevalence has been increasing globally.

Just like with osteoarthritis, the effectiveness of cat’s claw to ease this condition is said to be the result of its capacity to reduce inflammation. (1)

There are studies suggesting that cat’s claw may help ease rheumatoid arthritis symptoms. For instance, one study involving rheumatoid arthritis patients suggested that taking cat’s claw extract at 60mg daily alongside prescribed medication caused a 29% decrease of painful joints. (1)

There are other health benefits that are associated with the cat’s claw. Some of these are viral infections, high blood pressure, anxiety, asthma, ovarian cysts, stomach and bowel disorders, cancer, and even AIDS. However, more research is needed to support these claims.

What is Cat’s Claw?

Cat’s claw is commonly found in the Amazon forest and other tropical places in Central and South America. It is a tropical vine that can grow up to 30 meters or 98 feet tall. Furthermore, its name is derived from its thorns, which are hooked like the claws of cats.

Two of its common varieties are Uncaria guianensis and Uncaria tomentosa. The latter type is often used as an ingredient of supplements. You can usually find cat’s claw supplements in tea, powder, capsule, or liquid extract forms.

It is not surprising that cat’s claw is an in-demand supplement ingredient since it is known for its health benefits. In South America, its roots and barks have been used for centuries as a traditional cure for various illnesses, like infections, inflammations, and cancer.

How Does Cat’s Claw Work?

What makes the cat’s claw a powerful herb? This Amazonian plant contains phytochemical elements, such as carboxyl alkyl esters, plant sterols, quinovic acid, oxindole alkaloids, glycosides, and antioxidants. These components are believed to be responsible for the numerous health benefits of cat’s claw.

How Do I Take Cat’s Claw?

Traditionally, cat’s claw, particularly its bark, is made into powder or tea. Then, this is consumed to be a treatment for certain conditions.

In the present, cat’s claw is mostly taken as a supplement. If you decide to take it, please be advised that the dosage guides are not established yet. Nevertheless, the World Health Organisation (WHO) stated that the average dosage for cat’s claw supplement is 300 to 500 mg for capsules or 20 to 350 mg of extract, taken in 2 or 3 doses within the day. (1)

At the moment, there is a need for more research on the appropriate dosage of cat’s claw supplements. The FDA has not given approval of what should be the proper dosage of this supplement. For this reason, dosing recommendations differ depending on the manufacturers.

Can I Take It Along with Vitamins or Medicines?

Cat’s claw supplements may interfere with some medications. These drugs are those used as treatments for blood clotting, cancer, cholesterol, and blood pressure. For this reason, it is necessary that you speak to your physician first before taking any cat’s claw product. (1)

Is Cat’s Claw Safe?

Generally, cat’s claw is considered safe for most people. However, there could be side effects to some. Among the side effects reported are dizziness, low blood pressure, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and headache. Usually, these side effects go away once the person stops taking the supplement or treatment.

It is also reported that cat’s claw may slow down blood clotting. As a result, the taker, especially if on anticoagulants, may experience easy bruising and even bleeding. Therefore, people who will undergo surgery should stop taking this supplement at least two weeks prior to the operation to prevent excessive bleeding.

Moreover, due to lack of safety information, pregnant and lactating women are not advised to take cat’s claw supplements. The possible effects of cat’s claw to children are still unknown. For this reason, it is better for mothers to completely avoid such supplementation.
