According to Dr. Robert Berkowitz of the University of Pennsylvania Weight and Eating Disorders Program, if water retention makes you gain more than two pounds, then you should already see a doctor to check if you have any serious condition, such as kidney failure or heart disease, which may be causing the swelling (edema).

One of the symptoms of fluid retention is when there is real indention left on the skin if you push your finger on it. Other signs are increased abdominal girth, shortness of breath, loss of appetite, fatigue, and lesser urine.

2. “Low fat” foods

Many products in the market are labelled as ”low fat”. However, Lisa Miles, a nutrition scientist, explains that there are cases in which low fat foods actually contain too much sugar. The high level of sugar contributes to the increase of weight since it has a lot of calories.

For this reason, Miles advises that consumers need to read the labels before buying so-called “low fat” products. “You need to look at the overall energy and calories. Although a food may have a reduced amount of fat, it may still have the same amount of calories.” This is because the calories become the alternative to the reduced fat.

3. Medications

If you are taking regular medications for a certain health problem, then it is possible that your medicines are the culprit why you are gaining weight. There are certain medicines known for such side effect.

There are some patients who decide to stop taking the prescribed medicines for them once they find out that they can result to weight increase. However, Berkowitz advises that instead of stopping, these people could ask their doctor to prescribe alternative medicines that do not have the said effect.

Here are some of the common medicines that can lead to weight gain:

  • Steroids– Long-term usage of steroids can lead to weight increase up to over 20 pounds, especially because it boosts the appetite of the patient. Steroids are usually given for life-threatening conditions, so patients have no choice but to take them in spite of its increasing effect on their weight. The most common steroids known are adrenocorticoids, which are used to alleviate autoimmune illnesses like lupus, asthma, and arthritis.
  • Anti-depressants– There are different kinds of anti-depressant medicines prescribed, usually grouped as either Selective Serotonin and Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors (SNRIs) and Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs). Some of these can cause weight loss, but there are some that can make you add some pounds. Among these anti-depressants, venlafaxine, fluoxetine, paroxetine, and sertraline are believed to cause weight gain when used long-term.
  • Anti-diabetes drugs– The medicines for Type II diabetes are known to have a weight gain effect on patients. Ironically, the Type II diabetes is normally caused by obesity so patients need to lose weight. According to Berkowitz, diabetes patients may ask supervision from their physician to help them control or lose weight. This can be done by either prescribing a weight-loss medicine, like orlistat, or by decreasing their medicine dosage.

4. Stress

You are probably familiar with stress-eating—and yes, this can make your weight upsurge. Most of the times, stressed people resort to ‘comfort foods’, which are usually sugary and rich in calories, such as desserts. Well, they cannot be blamed since they have the power to boost the body’s happy hormones and energy level.

To prevent stress from making them fat, Anna Suckling, a dietitian, suggests that people who are going through stressful situations should eat more fruits, vegetables, and other foods that are low in calories to avoid weight gain.

She also adds that they have to learn coping with stress without involving food. She encourages doing physical activities, particularly exercise, which promotes mental wellness through the body’s release of endorphins, which are chemicals that can help fight off stress.

5. Thyroid Problem

Hyperthyroidism (also called myxedema), which is characterised by having low-functioning thyroid, can be blamed for gaining weight. However, this is not because of increased amount of body fat. Instead, this is due to swelling as a result of thick fluid in the tissue. George Bray, a Boyd professor from Louisiana State University, explains that the excess fluid is the cause of the thyroid-stimulated weight increase, but, fortunately, this condition can be treated.

Howard Eisensen, the director of the Diet and Fitness Center of Duke University, reveals that correcting a thyroid problem does not really help much in reducing weight, since the condition does not really add much pounds.

“But it’s rare to find someone who’s significantly overweight because of an underactive thyroid. Even if there is decreased thyroid function, correcting it doesn’t do much to correct overweight because it doesn’t cause much gain to begin with.”
